Red Nose Day (Poverty)

Updated: Jun 13, 2020

The photograph to the right of my son Logan and I is the piece, I entered in the 8th Annual Photography show held at the Art Center in Vernon Ct. If you click the photograph below, you will be directed to the Red Nose Day website.

How I got the idea and the medium I used.

One evening about 3 years ago I was at Walgreens in Coventry where I saw a bin full of red clown noses. Intrigued, I asked the cashier about them, she told me that the store was giving them away in support of 'Red Nose Day', an organization working to end child poverty one nose at a time. As a photographer I knew someday I could use the nose to create something meaningful and impactful, so I decided to take one.

Someday eventually came, and I was able to find the right location, model and “red nose” for my shot. Once I edited the photograph, I separated it into four sections and printed each one. Then my wife Briana and I transferred them to a piece of Da Vinci Pro Birch Wood Painting Panel using tattoo paper. The process was difficult because the transfers had to be laid down so there wasn't much of crease when the prints were being transferred.

Since the panel was made of wood, I tried using stain to blend everything together. Shortly after I realized I would have to add some other mediums to make it look natural. My wife did a great job and the tree I painted over the transfer really helped cover the spots that were more visible.

Short video of the gallery at the Art Center

I decided to do a short video to show my audience what the gallery looks like and some of the other pieces that were submitted by other photographers. Art Center East has a lot of exhibits and classes so if you would like to check out their website click here and maybe you will submit your art someday. Thank you and God bless
